Clairton Police Department is giving back to city residents by adding an outdoor movie night to summer programming.

With money donated through community fundraising, the department purchased a projector and screen for showing films to large audiences. The equipment will be put to use for the first time at the city's regular weekly family night on Wednesday from 6-10 p.m.

“Wreck-It Ralph” will be shown at 8:30 at the Clairton Park Lodge Pavilion.

“This summer, we started family recreation nights,” Deputy Mayor Kathy Tachoir said. “We have games, activities and crafts for all  ages from 2 to 99. The police wanted to add a movie night to our city-sponsored weekly events.”

City officials hope the first movie night will be a success and that it opens the door for more programming.

“This is a long-term investment for future events,” police Chief Rob Hoffman said. “This is a way for our department to give back to the community and to provide a positive social atmosphere for Clairton families.”

Mayor Rich Lattanzi said the goal of family programming is to give Clairton residents positive life experiences.

“We want to keep our children busy and off the streets,” he said. “We want to give kids something positive to remember and show them that the city cares about them.”

The mayor believes that involving the police department takes the effort a step further.

“Friendship between the police and the community will  be an asset to this city,” he said.

There was a good turnout for movie night. Southland 9 donated popcorn for the event.....mmmmmm good! Plans are being made for a movie next week. Thank you Clairton police dept. for sponsoring movie night in the park.
