The following information was posted on Clairton Middle/High School Facebook page this morning.
Consortium to pilot 21st Century Learning Center in Clairton Beginning in the fall, 5th through 8th grade students in Clairton City School District will be invited to come to The CASTLE (Clairton’s After School Teaching and Learning Experience). The program, which The Consortium will offer in collaboration with Clairton, is one of 12 in Allegheny County and 61 statewide to be selected under the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s federally funded 21st Century Learning Challenge Grant. (A consortium is an association of two or more individuals, companies, organizations or governments (or any combination of these entities) with the objective of participating in a common activity or pooling their resources for achieving a common goal). To launch the pilot, The Consortium organized a team of partners to provide a rich array of activities to reinforce student learning in STREAM (Science, Research, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). The CASTLE also will provide tutoring in reading and math and some evening programming focusing on health, nutrition and other topics for families of participating students. “We’ve reached out to partners who can bring Clairton’s students opportunities that they can’t access in their community,” said Tricia Gennari, who is overseeing the pilot. “The CASTLE will provide a safe environment at the school and lots of adult support and mentoring. All of the activities we’re planning are the kinds of hands-on experiences that motivate kids and keep them engaged.” Among partners are: Hip Hop on L.O.C.K.; Sense of Place Learning; Carnegie Mellon University’s CREATE Lab; MGR Foundation; Carnegie Museum of Art; PROGRESS(Program for Research and Outreach on Gender Equity in Society); and Futures Without Violence. Activities will range from science projects involving CMU’s Waterbot technology for monitoring water quality, to learning the math behind hip hop music and exploring Clairton’s history, heritage and ecology through field studies. “We’re really looking forward to working with the kids,” said Gennari. “These activities really help expand the outlets for self-exploration that we’re encouraging students to use as part of the partnership we began last year with Clairton to personalize learning and the learning environment.” For information on the CASTLE PROGRAM FOR GRADES 5-8 please contact Greg Spotti at 412-233-9200 x.1103 With the large reunion picnic approaching next Saturday, the Clairton Library has decided to open its Archives to the public on Friday, August 31st (the day before the reunion).
Items will be on display from Noon to 3:00 p.m. While the library is noted for visiting to read and borrow books, it should also be noted that there are computers there for use and activities for both adults and children! The following information was provided by Odessa Ellis; Odessa is in charge of the children's services at the library. These are some of the events which are currently offered at the library. Please visit the library website for future and on-going events at http://www.clairtonlibrary.org/ 10 week Wise Walk Program begins on Sept. 8, 2012 from 10:00am to 11:00am The wise walk group has been meeting together for about 3 years we still have several people from our core group and new people to join at any time during each session. We meet as a group each spring and fall, but this last spring we decided to go continuous into the summer. We meet at the library and we walk around the main streets in Clairton; we then come back to the library for a lite snack. I pass out motivation quotes every week and other info. related to healthly eating. Within our group, we have another group that like to walk the Montour Trail on State Street while we walk around in Clairton. Book Clubs: Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 at 1:00pm, the book is The Shoemaker's Wife by Adriana Trigiani Monday, Sept. 17, 2012 at 9:00am, the book is the Dressmaker of Khair Khana by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon The two book clubs are both adult book clubs and all women of different ages; we did have a few men, but not now. We read the book and discuss it with coffee and snacks at the library. Our book clubs don't just read the books, we like to go on field trips too. We read the Frank Lloyd Wright book and then went to visit his place, Kentuck Knob, and had lunch. Our most recent trip was to a cute little tea shop that sold antiques in Monongahela, PA, and two house tours in Clairton...one of African Art and one that has been named a historical home. Game Day for the children (every 3rd Sat. of the month) Game Day for the kids is ongoing all year, but I have more kids during the school year. We play board games and the Wii games with a lite snack; but when they get too antsy, I get the children to do exercises and racing games and they love it. Well as you can see, we do have fun here. I try to make the programs I run enjoyable so that the people will come back. This school year all U.S. public school cafeterias will be making healthy changes to their cafeterias to comply with the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act. You can help our school by simply cutting out the box tops of General Mills cereals and other items to earn money for education. Each box top is worth 10 cents to the school. More information about the program can be found at: http://www.boxtops4education.com/ There is a mailbox in the Elementary School marked "Dorothy". She coordinates the effort. Please drop the box tops off when you get a few. Below are products that have the box tops. Sometimes you can get items that have more than 1 point on them!!!
